Workforce Solutions Alamo Board youth programs are funded under the Workforce
Investment Act (WIA). These programs serve
economically disadvantaged youth ages 14-21 who are in or out of
school. Programs available to youth in the
Alamo Area include:
WIA Youth
Activities include:

tutoring, study skills training, and instruction leading to
secondary school completion, including dropout prevention strategies

alternative secondary school offerings
-
summer employment opportunities directly linked to academic and
occupational learning

paid and unpaid work experience, including internships and job
shadowing

occupational skills training
-
leadership development opportunities, which include community
service and peer-centered activities
-
supportive services
-
adult mentoring during and after program participation
-
follow-up services to support continued success in achieving
education and employment goals

comprehensive guidance and counseling
WIA Youth program services are offered by the following providers:
Alamo Area Development Corporation
– serves youth who reside in he following counties: Atascosa, Bandera,
Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina,

First Generation College Student Program
The Alamo First Generation College Project (AFGCP) provides
services to youth ages 14-21 who meet WorkSource Investment Act
eligibility criteria and are the first in their family to attend
college. The AFGCP is a collaboration between Workforce Solutions Alamo and the following
educational providers:

Goals of the First Generation College Student Program include:

Increase the number of students who take the Recommended
High School Program.

Increase enrollment in key areas of high school study,
including mathematics, science, computer literacy, problem
solving, and communications.

Increase college enrollment of minorities and economically
disadvantaged students.

Improve the articulation between two-year and four-year
institutions.

Increase retention rates of college students.

Increase the preparation of underachieving students for
higher education opportunities.

Increase career awareness, career exploration, and
counseling services.

Increase workplace mentoring for students by employers.
-
Increase workplace learning activities that may include paid
work experience, job shadowing, on-the-job training, or
school-sponsored enterprises.

Increase the active participation of employers in school
programs and activities.

Inform students about the professional opportunities
available through higher education, especially in high demand
occupational areas like teaching and nursing.

Increase collaborations between parents and school personnel
in encouraging, mentoring, and supporting students to succeed in
high school and pursue higher education.
