Career Center Jobs Fairs A Success

Alamo WorkSource Business Services continue to host free job fairs at its various Career Centers as part of its effort to connect employers with jobseekers. September featured more than 30 different companies from the San Antonio area at the Hillcrest Career Center. Potential full and part-time positions ranged from professional to skilled and general labor. Almost 800 jobseekers showed up to speak to HR representatives from the various companies which included such companies as USAA, UPS, Hyatt Hill Country Resort, River City Produce, and Bexar County offices.

“The Alamo region employment rate has remained strong and companies are once again seeking as many opportunities as possible to connect with jobseekers one-on-one,” said Chakib Chehadi, interim executive director of Alamo WorkSource. “This has created a growing and sustained demand for applicants with various skills and education levels, especially in demand occupations.”

For more information on participating in an Alamo WorkSource Career Center Job Fair, contact the Business Services Unit at (210) 224-HELP.

Child Care Provider Reimbursement Rates Increase

Recently the Texas Workforce Commission lifted the cap on increases to reimbursement rates for regulated child care providers. This decision will allow Alamo region clients access to more child care centers and homes who previously could not take these customers at the lower rate of reimbursement.

The decision especially benefits providers that participate in a Texas Early Education Model school readiness integration project, or are Texas Rising Star providers. In addition, it encourages providers who receive the increased reimbursement rate to use the funds to obtain certification under the Texas School Readiness Certification System- a program to increase the readiness of children before entering kindergarten.

The policy goes into effect on December 1, 2007. Alamo WorkSource funds the Child Care Delivery System through the City of San Antonio Children’s Resource division of the Office of Community Initiatives. For more information about Child Care, contact (210) 246-5600.

Choices Outreach Campaign

In an effort to increase participation in job search and training services for exempt customers receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligible for the CHOICES program, Alamo WorkSource worked with service delivery contractors to build awareness of support services available in a method that was not so intimidating or bureaucratic. As a result, a checkbook was designed for targeted customers allowing them to submit them with their Career Counselors as they progress through their workforce development programs.

The theme of the program, “Paying for your future” provides a clear message that with the help of workforce support services, you can have a self-sufficient future with career opportunities.

Career Centers in 12 county Alamo Region are disseminating the checkbooks that include checks for such items as:

  • Housing and Rental Assistance
  • Utility Assistance-Water, Gas/Electricity and Basic Phone

  • Car Repair
  • Work-Related Clothing and Uniforms
  • Child Care Assistance
